On 2 February, scientists and public health officials squared off in a panel discussion at the New York Academy of Sciences. At stake, the fate of two papers which describe a mutant strain of the avian influenza virus H5N1. The virus is capable of mammal-to-mammal transmission, which has raised concern that it might be transferable to humans. Several panelists sat down with Nature News to discuss their positions prior to the panel discussion. For more on the NYAS debate, visit our blog http://blogs.nature.com/news/2... and see our web special about the ongoing controversy over H5N1 http://www.nature.com/news/spe...

No amount of policies and treaties will stop people from abusing power. If it's in their interest they'll break them. We should get rid of all the artificial boundaries between people, declare all the resources on Earth as the common heritage of all people and work to provide people in their needs. Only in a society based on cooperation instead of competition or self-interest can science flourish. Anything less is a road to disaster. Giving power to people with primitive values is dangerous. PUBLISH. Wouldn't it be bad if some rogue lab also reached these results, fabricated weaponry, and only few labs in the world (the ones that did the present papers) would know what to do, and what the new virus could be. Knowledge is dangerous, but it is more dangerous when it is held by few. Discuss now, and we will be prepared
