this musical piece is written by the french composer 'Charles Gounoud' in 1859. its a melody imposed over Bachs Prelude no1 in C major, from the WELL TEMPERED CLAVIER written by bach 137 years before...the words a musical interpretation of a preexisting latin text, and as said the inscribed by gounoud.

sorry, drbarbarbaker, but this is the BACH/GOUNOD version. Just listen to the Schubert and Gounod versions back to back, maybe you can hear the difference

This is beautiful.Another good one is Dolores O Riordan of the Cranberries. She has such a recognizable voice! Like non other!:)

This is the song as Schubert composed it. Schubert was a European of the early nineteenth century. Others applied the Latin text of the prayer Ave Maria to these notes, a version which is heard much more often than the authentic German text. The translation appears to be fine. This is unrelated to the Bach-Gounod Ave Maria, a song adapted from a Bach prelude by Gounod, which always had a Latin text.

Mary was the mother of Jesus. She was no European or American. She was Palestinian. This beautiful song was written for Mary.
