I hung around with people who were called hippies. No one ever called himself a hippie--that term was created by the press. Anyway, they were no filthier than anyone else. The press called them filthy, just like the press called them hippies. Your brain is saturated with conservative propaganda.

Oopsie. I obviously meant 10,000 Maniacs. My apologies to the other 8,000 maniacs who were hurt by my misprint. Anyway, the point is the "Hippie Movement", by all who were there from the beginning was well and truly over by the end of 1966, just as the "Punk Movement" was toast by the end of 1976. The remnants were merely manques, dancing to the beat of the very same drum.

Hold on now. Wasn't it Cat Stevens ( aka Yusuf Islam) who wanted Salman Rushdie's head on a stick after the publication of The Satanic Verses? So much for freedom. Peace Train, my ass. No wonder Two Thousand Maniacs wanted it deleted from all future pressings of In My Tribe. Hippies. Hmm... The blind leading the stupid, methinks.
