Many people don't know the igloo is a fairly new invention. The northern natives did not build them until they were taken to England and saw brick houses. They copied the brick construction with snow blocks. Before that they survived the winters by staking down on the ice, large, live captured bull walruses, cutting an opening in the abdomen, applying a salve to stop bleeding, and climbing inside overnight. After several nights, they would release the walrus and capture another one.
