It seems to be John Doyle's preferred aesthetic. Plus, the idea that they're all 'accompanying' Bobby is an interesting way to view it. I'm sure John wouldn't indulge in it purely for gimmicks (though it would be naive to believe that wasn't a part of it).

Apparently Raul Esperanza wasn't the best on piano (or couldn't really play at all) so he basically had to practice it A LOT for the last song. And then when he had to perform it in front of Sondheim he was freaking out.

Having just listened to these clips I really dont like the use of musical instruments.Very gimmicky. The singing was so wonderful in the Crucible revivial that I was fully expecting this lauded version to be as good or even better but its not. I just wish the Crucible version could have a cast album.
