The mental gymnastics required to convince yourself that religion is true and faith is a virtue has also manifested itself into Reza's argument for his position. To argue with Sam over the extent to which religion motivates or to the exact extent that religion contributes to atrocities/general yuck! OR to accuse Sam of over-simplifying or not understanding the issues is irresponsible.

That's exactly my point. You think "correctness" means something in terms of language. The only difference correctness makes in language is when the meaning of the sentence can go any number of ways. You just verified that you understood what I communicated to you while also saying my language is bad. You're arguing that language has nothing to do with conveying ideas. Don't slide down that slope.

I also find Reza citing the behaviour of the Spanish and Portuguese somewhat disingenuous. Those countries had been Muslim for 700 years immediately prior to 1492. Well, unsurprisingly their slaving culture was not changed overnight; far from it, they did EXACTLY what the Muslims had ALWAYS done; conquer, obliterate 'heresy' and enslave everyone.

Reza Aslan speaks like a hack and a snake. He has already explained away to himself that there is nothing necessarily oppressive about polygamy, forced marriage (even of prepubescent girls to much older men) battery, honor killing, mutilation, flogging, crucifixion and beheading; ALL of which are advocated by his 'holy' book the Qu'ran. Not to mention slavery and dhimminitude or death for 'apostasy' and 'blasphemy'. These are the methods of habitual killers and is what Reza defends. |
